| Historically, school districts have
allowed their students to attend classes at local colleges or universities, in
addition to their own high school, in an effort to meet students’ needs and
interests. This is called “dual
enrollment.” |

The 1992-93 State School Aid Act
contains a provision that directs school districts to assist students in paying
tuition and fees for a class at a public or private college or university, if
all of the following conditions are met: |
| |
- The student must be classified as a JUNIOR or SENIOR at the
beginning of the 2007-2008 school year.
|
- The student must be enrolled in the school district for all the credits needed to graduate.
|
- The
student must also be enrolled for the class in the post-secondary
institution (college or university) during the regular school year.
|
- The college class must be one not offered by the local school district and must be an academic course (as opposed to an “activity course.”)
|
- The students in grade 11 must achieve proficiency in all areas of the High School Proficiency Test to participate in dual enrollment. Twelfth grade students may take college classes in any area
in which a proficient score is achieved.
|
- The school district is required to pay toward a student;s tuition and fees for one class, with some
limitations. Students are responsible for any balance of funds due.Students are no longer eligible when all high school graduation requirements are met.
