Writing Contests


 

 

Students are encouraged to participate in writing competitions. It gives them a chance to be creative and to test themselves against students from other school districts.


Law Day Essay

This contest is sponsored by the Michigan Lawyer's Auxiliary and the State Bar of Michigan. It is open to all 6th, 7th and 8th grade students in Michigan.  Young writers are asked to write 300-500 words to support a position by using core democratic values, while showing a knowledge of history, geography, civics and economics. Essays are judged on originality and their ability to state a clear position. Students are asked to demonstrate the use of research to compare/contrast and to support their position.The top three winners receive savings bonds. All winners receive a proclamation from the governor.

Coloma Middle School 7th grade students took first, second, and third places in 2005.


Daughters of the American Revolution Essay Contest

This contest allows students up to 1000 words to express their ideas on a pre-selected topic from the American Revolution. Judging is based on historical accuracy, adherence to the topic, organization of materials, interest, and originality. This year's topic was "The Louisiana Purchase-Thomas Jefferson's Legacy."
 

Coloma Middle School is proud to announce several local winners in 2006. Fifth, sixth, and seventh grade students all won 1st place in the regional competition.  The state competition is in the spring.

Awards include certificates, medals and books. A gold pin and monetary award is presented to the national winner at the Continental Congress.
